  • Take responsibility for your actions
  • Heal emotionally and spiritually

Why This Program Works

This program works because I, personally, lived it. All the self-help books, blogs and articles I read when I was trying to heal my broken heart, collectively, guided me to many of the practices listed in the 12 Steps Program. Looking back, I wish I would have taken the time to study them the first time it was presented to me.

Journal Entry

You are not going to believe this! I’m at a rest stop off of I-95 in North Carolina. I decided to take a break to journal and do a little research. Again, I came across the 12 Steps Program. I’ve been seeing it a lot in my research but I kept bypassing it because I am not an alcoholic or addicted to drugs.

This time, something told to me to take a look. OMG! After reading the steps, I realized I, unknowingly went through the same steps to heal my broken heart! Coincidence or fate that I am seeing this today?

Now, that I have reached Step 12, I created Healthy Grieving Bootcamp to recommend the 12 Steps Program and share my experiences while rebuilding my life after heartbreak. This 12 article series is a great example of what it looks like to heal from loss. Enjoy and learn from my story!

But just don’t take my word for it. The 12 Steps Program was originally created to help people overcome addiction. It began with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), but today it’s also used for emotional healing, trauma, grief, and spiritual growth.

For each step, I have written an article that includes an explanation of the step and a personal anecdote of how I applied it to my healing process. My stories are real. Some parts are tear-jerkers, but necessary to paint a picture of my full experience.

Let’s get started!

Steps To Heal a Broken Heart

Step 1: Be Honest With Yourself

Feeling the pain is the first step to learning how to heal a broken heart. Without judgment:

  • Acknowledge the pain of your broken heart.
  • Admit that the pain has upset your daily life, emotions, and thoughts.
  • Accept that what you have been doing is not helping and healing requires a different path than the one you have been taking.
  • Agree to finding support, guidance, and a new way forward.

Step 2: Believe Healing is Possible

Grief is not something to avoid, it’s something to move through. Give yourself permission to cry, journal, or sit quietly with your feelings. This step is necessary to heal a broken heart. Choose to trust that a power greater than yourself can:

  • Restore your heart.
  • Renew your hope.
  • Guide you toward wholeness.

Step 3: Place Your Healing in God’s Hands

You cannot control how someone chose to love you… or leave you. Let go of what’s out your control to make space for healing and growth.

  • Make a conscious decision to stop carrying your pain alone and invite God to walk with you through the healing process.
  • Choose to surrender your heartbreak, your fears, and your future to God, trusting Him to lead you toward wholeness.
  • Decide to trust God’s plan for your healing, even when you cannot see the path ahead.

Step 4: Discover What Needs Healing

Your emotions are not wrong, they are information. Acknowledge anger, sadness, or confusion as natural signals guiding you toward healing.

  • Take a fearless and honest look at yourself, your heartbreak, and the areas of your life that need healing.
  • Explore your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and wounds with honesty and compassion.
  • Honestly examine your heart, your hurts, and the experiences that have shaped your relationships. Check for patterns.

Step 5: Share Your Truth

Acknowledge the truth of your experiences and the ways they have shaped your thoughts, emotions, and relationships. With honesty and courage, share your story, your pain, and your healing discoveries with:

  • God.
  • Yourself.
  • Trusted companion.

Step 6: Prepare Your Heart For Change

Open yourself to the possibility that God can transform the parts of your heart that are keeping you stuck in pain.

Journal, cry, pray, or move your body. Releasing buried emotions is a key step in the journey to emotional freedom and healing.

Let God heal the:

  • Wounds.
  • Fears.
  • Beliefs.
  • Unhealthy patterns that have shaped your relationships.

Step 7: Ask God to Heal Your Heart

Who were you before the pain? Reconnect with your passions, values, and joys. This helps you rebuild your sense of self while learning to heal a broken heart.

Be willing to change. Invite God to help you heal and release the pain you have been carrying and what is holding you back.

  • Humbly ask God to heal the wounds, fears, limiting beliefs, and emotional burdens that are keeping you from experiencing peace and wholeness.

Step 8: Make Peace With Your Past

Create a list of the relationships that still affect your heart including those who have hurt you and those you have hurt.

Become willing to:

  • Seek healing.
  • Pursue forgiveness.
  • Release resentment and what remains unresolved.
  • Reconcile and make peace where appropriate.

Step 10: Stay Honest With Yourself and Walk Daily in Your Healing

Healing is not one decision—it’s a daily commitment. Keep walking forward, step by step, trusting that you are learning to fully heal a broken heart.

  • Maintain self-awareness, continuing your healing practices, and taking responsibility for your growth as you move forward.
  • Regularly reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and make changes when you recognize areas that need growth and healing.
  • Continue to examine your heart, and when old wounds, unhealthy patterns, or mistakes surface, address them with honesty and compassion.
  • Make self-awareness a habit, recognizing both your progress and the areas where healing is still taking place.

Step 12: Share Your Healing and Keep Growing

Protect your healing like your life depends on it. Boundaries help you reclaim your energy and prevent old wounds from reopening.

  • Having experienced healing and transformation through these steps, share what you’ve learned with others and continue practicing these principles throughout your life.
  • Use your healing journey to inspire hope in others while continuing to nurture your own growth and well-being.
