12 Steps To Heal a Broken Heart: Healthy Grieving Bootcamp

Introduction

Healthy grieving means allowing yourself to feel your emotions without ignoring, covering up, or rushing the process. If you’re trying to heal a broken heart, you are not alone!

Healing a broken heart is a journey you walk one step at a time, little by little, feeling by feeling. When you give yourself permission to face your pain, you can begin to understand what broke you, uncover what is keeping you stuck, and find your way back to yourself.

Healthy Grieving Bootcamp is a 12-step healing program created to help you move through heartbreak intentionally and learn how to heal your heart in a healthy way. Whether youโ€™re grieving a breakup, the loss of a friendship, rejection, or another deep emotional loss, these 12 steps will guide you through the process of facing your pain, understanding your wounds, releasing what no longer serves you, and rebuilding your life from a place of wholeness.

This page is your Healthy Grieving Bootcamp hub. Here, youโ€™ll find all 12 steps. Each step includes a lesson that explains the importance of the step and shares an example of how I went through it in my personal healing journey.

Along with each lesson you will find a HeartWork Guide designed to put your healing into action. Each guide includes journal prompts, HeartWork activities, action steps, prayers, and affirmations to help you process what you are learning and make it personal.

You donโ€™t have to rush your healing. You just have to be willing to take the next step. Letโ€™s begin your Healnโ€™ journey.

The Creation of Healthy Grieving Bootcamp

Most people try to heal a broken heart by waiting for time to pass. While some distract themselves, stay busy, jump into another relationship, or convince themselves that they should be ‘over it’ by now. Yet, weeks, months, and even years later, the pain remains.

I am guilty. I tried all of the above, and years later, my pain was just as intense as the day my ex told me she was dating and had already kissed someone just two weeks after our split.

The 12 Steps of Healthy Grieving Bootcamp works… because I lived it!

I learned to be honest about my pain, accept the reality of my loss, take responsibility for my healing, examine my patterns, and gradually rebuild my life through Christ.

When I was healing my own broken heart, I was simply doing everything I could to heal by working with a therapist, reading self-help books, journaling, and applying the tools I discovered along the way.

Over time, I realized that many of the practices that were helping me heal closely mirrored the principles of the well-known 12-Step Program for Alcoholics Anonymous. Although my journey was focused on heartbreak rather than addiction, I discovered that the path to healing followed many of the same foundational steps.

That discovery became the foundation for Healthy Grieving Bootcamp.

Journal Entry

You are not going to believe this! I’m at a rest stop off of I-95 in North Carolina. I decided to take a break to journal and do a little research. Again, I came across the 12-Step Program. I’ve been seeing it a lot in my research, but I kept bypassing it because I am not an alcoholic or addicted to drugs.

This time, something told me to take a look. OMG! After reading the steps, I realized I had unknowingly gone through the same steps to heal my broken heart! Coincidence or fate? Why am I seeing this today?

Why This Healing System Works

The Healthy Grieving Bootcamp works because it does more than help you cope with heartbreak. It helps you understand it.

I adapted the wisdom of the 12-Step Program to the grieving process, creating a healing path specifically for people recovering from a broken heart. Each step in this program is designed to help you move through grief with intentional awareness, honesty, self-compassion, and personal growth.

Looking back, I wish I had a step-by-step program for heartbreak to help me heal my broken heart.

how to heal a broken heart

Healthy Grieving Bootcamp will help you get yourself back, not your ex. It is a step-by-step journey that helps transform heartbreak from something that breaks you into something that awakens you.

And when you become aware of your wounds, beliefs, patterns, and choices that drained you, heartbreak no longer becomes the end of your story. It becomes the beginning of your transformation.

Now that I have reached Step 12, I created Healthy Grieving Bootcamp to share what I learned while healing my broken heart and rebuilding my life. Healthy Grieving Bootcamp and the HeartWork Guide are a great example of what it looks like to heal from loss.

To support your healing journey, each step includes:

  • An article that explains the steps and why it matters.
  • A personal journal entry sharing how I experienced and applied the step in my own healing journey. *My stories are real. Some parts are tear-jerkers, but necessary to paint a picture of my full experience. Enjoy and learn from my story!
  • A HeartWork Guide filled with journal prompts, reflection activities, action steps, a prayer, and affirmations to help you put what you’ve learned into practice.

Steps To Heal a Broken Heart

Step 1

Step 1: Be Honest About Your Pain

Healing begins with honesty. Before you can heal your broken heart, you have to acknowledge that you are hurting and be willing to face the reality of your pain.

  • Acknowledge your heartbreak without judgement.
  • Admit how your pain has upset your daily life, emotions, and thoughts.
  • Recognize the ways you’ve been coping and how they are no longer helping you heal.
  • Become willing to try a different path forward.
Begin Step 1

Step 2: Realize You Cannot Heal Alone

You were never meant to carry heartbreak by yourself. Healing requires support, guidance, and the willingness to receive help when you need it.

  • Recognize when you need support on your healing journey.
  • Open yourself to trusted people who can provide encouragement, wisdom, and accountability.
  • Allow yourself to be supported instead of isolating yourself in your pain.

Begin to trust that healing is possible, even when you cannot see the way forward.

    Begin Step 2

Step 3: Place Your Healing in God’s Hands

You cannot control how someone chooses to love you… or leave you. This step invites you to surrender what you cannot control and place your healing in God’s hands.

    • Stop carrying your heartbreak as if you have to figure everything out on your own.
    • Surrender your pain, fears, and future to God.
    • Trust God to walk with you through the healing process.
    • Choose faith even when you cannot see what comes next.
    Begin Step 3

Step 4: Let God Reveal What Needs Healing

Once you surrender your healing to God, you can begin taking an honest look beneath the surface of your heartbreak. Your emotions can reveal wounds, beliefs, and patterns that need your attention.

    • Examine your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors with honesty and compassion.
    • Identify the wounds that may be influencing the way you see yourself and your relationships.
    • Recognize unhealthy patterns that may have contributed to your pain.
    • Invite God to reveal what needs to be healed within you.
    Begin Step 4

    Step 5: Share Your Truth

Healing requires you to stop hiding your truth from yourself, from God, and from the people you trust. Sharing your story can help you process what happened and begin releasing the weight of what you’ve been carrying.

With honesty and courage, begin sharing your truth with:

    • God.
    • Yourself.
    • A trusted companion who can provide support and a safe space to be heard.

You don’t have to tell everyone your story. Healing begins with telling the truth in the places where it is safe to be honest.

    Begin Step 5

Step 6: Prepare Your Heart For Change

Healing requires recognizing what hurts. You must also become willing to let God transform the parts of your heart that are keeping you stuck.

Journal, cry, pray, or move your body. Releasing buried emotions is a key step in the journey to emotional freedom and healing.

    Prepare yourself to release:

    • Old wounds.
    • Fears.
    • Limiting beliefs.
    • Unhealthy patterns.
    • Emotional habits that keep you connected to your pain.

Be willing to feel, release, and make room for something healthier.

    Begin Step 6

Step 7: Ask God to Heal Your Heart

Once you have become willing to change, ask God to heal the places in your heart that you cannot heal on your own.

      • Humbly ask God to heal your wounds, fears, limiting beliefs, and emotional burdens.
      • Invite Him into the areas of your heart that still hurt.
      • Become willing to receive His healing, guidance, and transformation.
      • Begin reconnecting with the woman you were before heartbreak while allowing God to shape who you are becoming.
      Begin Step 7

Step 8: Make Peace With Your Past

To heal your past, you must release the people, experiences, resentments, old hurts, and regrets, crowding your heart.

      Become willing to:

      • Acknowledge the relationships and experiences that still affect you.
      • Pursue forgiveness where healing requires it.
      • Release resentment and unresolved pain.
      • Make peace with your past without allowing it to control your future.
      • Reconcile where appropriate and healthy.
      Begin Step 8

      Step 9: Take Healing Action

Healing requires action. Once you understand what needs to change, you must be willing to take intentional steps toward peace, freedom, and wholeness.

      • Address unresolved issues with honesty, compassion, and wisdom.
      • Take appropriate action toward forgiveness and closure.
      • Set boundaries where necessary to protect your healing.
      • Make choices that support the woman you are becoming.
      • Move forward without harming yourself or others.
      Begin Step 9

Step 10: Stay Honest With Yourself and Walk Daily in Your Healing

Healing isn’t one decision. It’s a daily commitment. As you move forward, continue paying attention to your heart, your choices, and the patterns that can pull you back into old ways of thinking and behaving.

      • Maintain self-awareness, continue your healing practices.
      • Regularly reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and make changes when you recognize areas that need growth and healing.
      • Take responsibility for your growth.
      • Regularly examine your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
      • Address old wounds and unhealthy patterns when they resurface.
      • Honor how far you’ve come and remain open to the parts of yourself that are still healing.
      Begin Step 10

Step 11: Deepen Your Connection With God

Healing requires both letting go of the old and actively building the new. As you continue your journey, deepen your relationship with God and allow Him to guide your life beyond heartbreak.

      • Spend time in prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection to deepen your connection with God.
      • Seek God’s wisdom for your healing and your future.
      • Listen for His guidance and remain open to where He leads you.
      • Continue building a relationship with God that strengthens you beyond your healing journey.
      Begin Step 11

Step 12: Share Your Healing and Keep Growing

Healing doesn’t end when you complete the 12 steps. The final step is about living what you’ve learned, protecting the healing you’ve gained, and using your experience to encourage others.

      • Continue practicing the principles that helped you heal.
      • Protect your healing with healthy boundaries and intentional choices.
      • Share what you’ve learned when your story can offer hope to someone else.
      • Continue growing emotionally and spiritually.
      • Let your healing become part of the way you live, love, and show up in the world.

This is where healing becomes more than something you experienced. It becomes something you live.
