Healthy Grieving Bootcamp – Step 4: ‘Take an Honest Look Within’

Introduction
When your heart is broken, it is easy to focus on what someone else did to you. You question their choices or wonder why they couldn’t love you the way you needed to be loved. Those questions are understandable. However, healing eventually requires you to turn your attention inward and ask yourself a different question: What within me led me to believe that I needed their love?
That question can be uncomfortable because self-honesty requires you to look beyond the pain and evaluate your own thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, choices, and patterns. It means recognizing the things you may not want to see and acknowledging the ways you may have contributed to your own unhappiness.
Although the truth may hurt, it also heals. Self-honesty can create the shift you need to better understand who you are, what you feel, and why you do the things you do.
Before We Move Forward…
You’ve made it through three important steps in your healing journey. In:
- Step 1, Be Honest About Your Pain. You began acknowledging the pain instead of pretending you were okay.
- Step 2, Realize You Cannot Heal Alone. You recognized that healing does not have to happen in isolation.
- Step 3, Place Your Healing in God’s Hands. You were invited to surrender your healing to God and trust Him with what you cannot control.
Now, Step 4 asks you to do something that can be challenging: Give your inner world your attention.
Self-honesty means having the courage to acknowledge the parts of yourself you may not be proud of. You cannot change what you are unwilling to see. So, before we move forward, give yourself permission to take off the mask, stop making excuses, and look deep down within yourself with honesty and forgiveness.
This is where self-awareness begins.

God’s Invitation
It is natural to think about what happened and what went wrong. But healing also requires you to become honest about what is happening inside of you. Take an honest look within to notice what you may still be carrying from your past.
Rejection, abandonment, disappointment, and heartbreak can shape the way you see yourself, and how you associate with others. Without realizing it, you may have developed habits and coping mechanisms that help you avoid painful emotions rather than face them.
Step 4 invites you to acknowledge those beliefs, behaviors, and emotional patterns with truthfulness and compassion. Please do not judge yourself for having them. Try to understand where they came from and recognize if they will support your healing.
And remember, you are not doing this work alone. Since you have already placed your healing in God’s hands, allow Him to reveal the wounded areas of your heart that you may have been afraid to face.
One step at a time. One truth at a time. One layer at a time. There is more to discover. You are still becoming whole.

My Healn’ Journey With Self-Honesty
As an adult, I chased the things that made me happy. The only way I knew how to bring joy to my life was to attach to another. Nothing felt better to me than receiving someone else’s affection. It made me feel good inside and gave me the strength to handle whatever life dealt me.
But unfortunately, because of my dependence…
For Your Healn’
Heartbreak doesn’t always end when the relationship ends. Sometimes the relationship is over, but you still feel rejected. The person is gone, and you feel abandoned. Or you may have moved on from the situation without realizing that you were still carrying pieces of it.
To find out what may have been left behind from the breakup and to see what is really going on inside of you, take a personal inventory and ask yourself:
- What am I still carrying ?
- What did this experience make me believe about myself?
- What am I still holding onto?
- How has my pain affected the way I love, trust, or protect myself?
- What have I been avoiding?
Don’t try to answer everything right now, but just notice what rises to the surface. If something makes you uncomfortable, don’t immediately push it back down. Bring it to God. Here is a simple prayer:
Remember, the purpose of taking a personal inventory is to engage in an earnest self-examination to better understand yourself.
If you’re ready to go deeper, Step 4 of the HeartWork Guide will walk you through a Personal Heart Inventory. You’ll have an opportunity to explore what you’re carrying, what you’ve come to believe about yourself, what you’re still holding onto, how your pain may have affected your choices, and what you’re ready to bring before God.
You don’t have to uncover everything today. For now, just be willing to see.

Moving Forward…
As you continue through the Healthy Grieving Bootcamp, you will be invited to look deeper into the places within you that heartbreak may have touched.
You may uncover things that you didn’t realize were connected to your pain. Don’t rush the process! You just simply need to be willing to keep showing up for your healing.
The next step will build upon what you have already begun. As you move forward, give yourself permission to be honest with yourself and not feel bad about your findings. The Personal Heart Inventory will help you understand yourself more deeply so you can begin to heal differently.
