Human Energy Field
The concept of the human energy field originated in ancient spiritual practices of Hinduism and Buddhism. Similar to Traditional Chinese Medicine, they also believe there is an energetic presence that influences the physical body. However, their perception of the energy system’s structure and how it can be balanced differs slightly.
They suggest that there is an energetic field that surrounds the physical body that cannot be seen by the naked eye. The energetic field is described as having a series of seven energy layers. Over time, their original concept of the number of energy layers has transformed. Buddhists believe there are three layers, Hinduism suggests there are five layers, and the New Age Model proposes there are seven. For this guide, the New Age Model will be referenced.
Even though the Chinese and Ancient Indian concepts are somewhat alike regarding the presence and flow of energy in the human body, Hinduism and Buddhism take it a step further and suggest the chakra energy system. It includes energy layers, prana, nadis, and chakras. Let’s take a look to see how they are connected and work together.
Energy Layers
The human energy field can be described as your personal atmosphere that creates an energy field around you. That energy field is made up of seven vibrational layers that envelop, weave through, and charge the human body. All of the vibrational layers are connected and each layer acts as a database that holds and shares information about the condition of your body, your emotions, thoughts, and spiritual awareness. Collectively, the energy layers work together to influence your overall health by interacting with every cell, tissue, and organ to keep you alive, balanced, and connected to the universe.
Visualization: Think of your physical body and energy system as a cell phone. You can see and touch the material shell. Everywhere you go, it also goes. The outer shell (physical body) can be felt and seen. The software (energy system) that allows the cell phone to function and share information with other apps goes unnoticed. But it is present!
Prana
Prana is the vital life force energy that makes life possible in all living things. It is present in the human energy field and serves as the electricity that powers it, in nature, as sunlight, food, air, water, and divine energy, and also in the physical body which is described as the electricity that fuels life processes such as breathing, digestion, and circulation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is referred to as Life Force Energy. Without it, the body becomes lifeless even if the organs are not damaged.
When prana is flowing freely in the body you may feel energized, mentally sharp, emotionally stable, physically well and spiritually connected. Many refer to these symptoms as bliss, feeling blessed, or filled with the holy spirit.
When prana is low or blocked you may feel tired, foggy, heavy, anxious, unmotivated, and prone to illness. We some time refer to this type of energy as lazy, depressed, experiencing bad luck, or the devil is busy.
Nadis
Prana flows through nadis, which are similar to meridians. They are described as tubes or light currents that flow through the body like a stream or river and provide energy to every cell, organ, and system. There are over 72,000 nadis, but there are three main ones: Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna.

- The Ida nadi begins at the base of the spine and spirals upward to the left nostril.
- The Pingala begins at the base of the spine and spirals upward to the right nostril.
- Sushumna nadi runs straight up the center axis of the spine.
Chakras
The places where the three main nadis intersect, a hotspot or hub of accumulated energy, is formed, called a Chakra. There are many chakras; however, there are seven major ones.

The seven main chakras are located within the subtle body and are vertically positioned in a straight line up and down the spine from the crown of the head to the tailbone. Each has its number, name, specific location, and health focus. They are circular and spin like wheels to direct the flow of the life force energy. Each one of the energy centers is a gateway that receives, stores and gives energy. And controls the energy flow to a designated part of the body.
The seven main energy centers include:

Chakras and the Life Force Energy
The chakras and nadis (meridians) share the responsibility of exchanging and distributing prana (life force energy). All of the positive and negative energy we generate, store, and are exposed to travels through the chakras and along the nadis (meridians). Everything around us in the environment, including the energy from interacting with others, our thoughts, and our emotions, collectively plays a role in our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
The chakra system acts as a guide for our conscious and subconscious. They are the spiritual pilot that helps us to maneuver through life. The system naturally works with the divine and allows us to become open to receive guidance and blessings. When the chakra centers are open, we experience good health, can exist as our authentic selves, and live with excitement, feeling blessed.
The chakra system also has a built-in energetic shield to protect us from the visible and invisible world. So, when we get overwhelmed with negative vibrations for a length of time from everyday challenges, our chakras will try to protect our positive energy and slow down or block the flow of energy until the energetic threat passes. If a chakra stays obstructed for an extended period, the flow of free and positive nourishing energy can be restricted from being received. And when this happens, we become closed off and create stagnant energy within.
Whatever energy passes through, whether positive or negative, it will appear outward through our behavior, thoughts, and emotions. If negative, it may show up as illness and disease. The good news is that your chakras are constantly shifting in and out of balance. Therefore, you can rebalance them when symptoms appear.
Let’s look at how you can determine if your chakras are balanced or need harmonizing.
